How accurate should a laser level be?
+ -

The accuracy required for a laser level depends on the specific tasks and the professional standards of the industry in which it is used.

General Construction and DIY Projects

For basic tasks such as hanging pictures, aligning shelves, or simple construction tasks, a laser level with an accuracy of ± 3mm at 10m (± 1/8″ at 30ft) is usually sufficient.

Professional Contracting

For more demanding applications such as framework, basic site grading, and standard construction work, an accuracy of ± 2mm at 10m (± 1/16″ at 30ft) is generally acceptable. This level of precision helps ensure that construction elements are correctly aligned, reducing errors and rework.

Precision Construction and Surveying

For high-precision tasks such as formwork levelling, foundation setting, and other critical alignment tasks, a higher accuracy is required. Laser levels like the Leica Rugby 620 and 640 offer accuracies of ± 2.2mm at 30m (± 3/32″ at 100ft), which are well-suited for such applications.

Rotating laser levels and total stations used in professional surveying typically provide accuracies ranging from ± 1.5mm to ± 3mm at 30m. These tools are essential for tasks that demand the highest precision.

Specialized Applications

For specific applications such as interior layout work (drywall, suspended ceilings), or long-distance leveling (road construction, large-scale grading), laser levels with even higher accuracy may be required. The Leica Rugby 640G, for example, provides exceptional visibility and precision with a green beam, maintaining high accuracy even in challenging conditions.

How often do I need to calibrate my laser level?
+ -

Brands like Leica provide specific calibration intervals and procedures for their laser levels. Typically, they recommend calibrating the device every 6 to 12 months to maintain optimal accuracy.

Additionally, calibration is necessary in the following situations:

  • Before first use
  • Before every high-precision survey
  • After rough or long transport
  • After long storage or extended work periods

At SIS, we offer calibration, service, and repair solutions in our Leica Geosystems certified workshop. Contact us to book your service!
